Building a Bike

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

Working for a Bicycle company has it advantages. One benefit is that they allow us to have some of the returned items. I have been gathering up things to build up a bicycle. Initially it was going to be a Cyclo-cross bike. I was able to purchase one though for a good price. Now it is going to be a road bike. Part of this is due to the fact that I was just able to get a Road Frame. It is a Scattante XRL frame. So now to take inventory of what I need and what I have and don’t have.

  1. Frame – Check (Scattante XRL 51 Blue)

  2. Seat post – Check (Forte Precision Seat Post)

  3. Saddle – Check (Forte Carbon SLX) Think I would like to eventually try the Forte Pro Sl.
  4. Handlebars – Check (Ritchey WCS – This is not exactly it, but it is similar.)
  5. Stem – Check (Weyless) – Would like to switch it out for a White Stem probably the Ritchey Comp Stem or WCS Axis-4
  6. Headset – Still needed
  7. Fork – Check (Scattante Carbon Fork)
  8. Shifters – Possibly. Have not tested fully,  but they seem to be working shifters (Shimano)
  9. Front Derailleur – Check (Shimano either Ultegra or Tiagra depending on which fits)
  10. Rear Derailleur – Check (Shimano Ultegra)
  11. Crankset – Check (Shimano Ultegra)
  12. Bottom Bracket – Still needed
  13. Brakes – Still needed (have one Shimano 105 Black brake)
  14. Pedals – Check (Speedplay Light Action – Black)
    Speedplay Light Action - Black
  15. Wheels – Check
  16. Cassette Check – (Shimano Ultegra)
  17. Chain – Still needed
  18. Bottle cages (Non Critical)
  19. Handlebar Tape – Check (Forte Cork)

WOW Bicycle Tour

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Last weekend, David and I rode in the WOW Bicycle Tour in Warren, OH. We rode the 64 mile course through Trumbull and Ashtabula Counties on the Western Reserve Greenway. We had an absolute blast riding together.

Here is a picture of David and I before we began the ride. The photographer for the event just happened to be one of David’s friends, and he shared pictures with us.

Here is a picture of us David and I about 10 miles into the ride.

Here is a picture of David and I about 20 miles into the ride.

Next month we are going to be riding in the Bike MS Historic New Bern Ride. We will be riding on a team from David’s job. If you are interested in donating to MS, you can support David or me by donating (just click the hyperlinks and it will take you to our pages).

Picking Up the Pieces

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

David and I have picked up cycling. David works for a cycling company, so it seems like a good fit for us. For the past couple of months, we have been on the bikes nearly every day. We try to ride at least 9-10 miles a day and then do a long ride once or twice a week.

This week, we did our long ride on Saturday morning. We rode 28.9 miles on the American Tobacco Trail. The piece of the trail we ride is 13.5 miles round trip, so we rode the whole thing twice and then went back to a playground along the trail so the boys could play.

On our second trip down the trail, I wasn’t paying enough attention and ran into a pole in the middle of the trail. I am thankful that I did not sustain any injuries; my body did not come in contact with the pole at all.

My bike, on the other hand, was not so lucky. The force of the bike slamming against the pole shattered my pedal into several pieces.

You may wonder why we spend so much time in the saddle. Currently we are preparing for a couple of rides. The first ride will take place this coming weekend (August 9) in Warren, OH. It will be a 64 mile ride on the scenic Western Reserve Greenway.

The second ride is on September 12 and 13 in New Bern, NC. We will be riding in the Bike MS Historic New Bern Ride. We will either be riding in the 75 mile or 100 mile ride depending on our training between now and the ride, and the weather the weekend of the ride.

David rode in this ride last year with a team from his job and had a great time. This year we will also be riding with the team from David’s job. You can learn more about the team here. If you are interested in donating to MS, you can either donate to David here, or to me here.
